About the Role

Objective/Purpose: The Power Converter SW Engineer reports to the VGC Power Converter Team Leader and directly contributes to converter design, development, control design, programming, testing, versioning, documentation, and library component creation of key prototypes supporting business growth on the power conversion field. The Power Converter SW Engineer develops and updates power converter topologies and respective control loops, making sure that each of the developed/updated parts is properly documented/versioned and tested. Some of the tasks expected to be developed/updated include the research and assessment of state-of-the-art topologies applied to bi-directional DC/DC (isolated and non-isolated) and DC/AC power converters, definition of modulation schemes, converter filters design and passives sizing, definition of protection requirements, and control loops design. The Power Converter SW Engineer must work closely with the HW and the Embedded team being responsible to foster cooperation and ensure clarity on the different project’s phases. The Power Converter SW Engineer is also responsible for project delivery and innovation roadmap infeed as required and in support of the VG CoLAB Active Systems Leader.

Key Responsibilities:

  • SW parts development, testing and validation.

  • Technology development on SW Power Converter solutions for microgrid applications, including:

    • Functional and system design specifications. System modelling: use simulation tools to create and pre-test power converter models.

    • Power converters design: definition of topologies for different applications including the interconnection of BESS with DC and/or AC grids (Low- and Medium- voltages).

    • Ensure a proper design of inner control loops (stability and performance) including current controllers, DC bus voltage controllers, AC voltage controllers, and power control (4Q’s control).

    • Advanced control loops for grid support and island operations, including Droop control, virtual impedance, and synthetic inertia/virtual inertia.

    • Power converter testing: define testing procedures, software debugging, and datasheets.

    • Provision of converter operation flowcharts including protections and error codes management, allowing to depict application interaction environments to infeed RT Testing V&V team or to otherwise support VGC activities.

    • Publish technical papers and contribute to maintaining an updated VGC Wiki.

  • Support technical development, innovate, and identify IP opportunities.

  • Propose improvements, participate in events, and act in the company's best interest.

Requirements

Minimum Qualification: M.Sc. in Electrotechnical and Computer Engineering, Power Electronics, or related field.

Experience: Industrial and/or academic experience in developing and delivering power converter prototypes with exposure to innovation.

Technical Skills:

  • Solid knowledge of the state-of-the-art in power converters for microgrid applications.

  • Strong knowledge of power converter control loop design (classic and modern approaches).

  • Steady-state and dynamic modeling of power converter topologies and respective modulation schemes.

  • Deep understanding of control loop design applied to power converters.

  • Strong knowledge of primary and secondary control layers in microgrids, including their challenges and requirements.

  • Advanced programming skills, primarily in C (desired).

  • Experience in MCU programming, including state machines, error handling, and protections as complements to converter control loops (desired).

  • Excellent spoken and written English (other languages are valuable) (desired).

Key Value Drivers:

  • Team player with a focus on growth, knowledge-sharing, and collaboration.

  • Result-oriented, efficient, and adaptable to change

  • Creative, open-minded, and solution-oriented mindset.

  • Excellent communication skills.

  • Highly focused and oriented to detail.

  • High energy, drive for innovation, and ability to inspire and motivate others.

Software Skills:

  • Modelling tools: MATLAB/Simulink, Ansys Twin Build, or similar.

  • Programming: Python, C/C++, or similar.

  • Automation tools: Experience in SW programming (e.g., Excel macros, GSheet macros, Python) for the development of supportive tools to accelerate software development.

  • Version control: Experience in SW release management (Git or similar)
