About the Role

Objective/Purpose: As a Battery Design Engineer, you will contribute directly to the structural and mechanical design, optimization, and validation of advanced battery modules and packs. The role focuses on the seamless integration of safety, efficiency, and structural integrity into innovative energy storage solutions. You will collaborate closely with the thermal management, power electronics, and manufacturing teams to develop robust and efficient battery systems.

The Battery Design Engineer will integrate projects related to energy storage systems real use-case demonstrators in the scope of collaborative projects where VG CoLAB is responsible for the development and commissioning of Redox-flow (RFB) and lithium (NMC, LFP, LMFP, and SIB) containerized battery systems up to 300 kWh, with custom and top-performance power electronics and battery packs developed in-house. The Battery Design Engineer will integrate those projects with responsibilities in the development of the piping structure in the case of RFBs, and on the thermal solutions for Li-based battery modules including immerged, air-cooled, and cold plate cooling solutions.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Design & Optimize battery structures for reliability, efficiency, and safety.

  • Simulate & Validate mechanical strength and thermal performance using FEA and thermal simulations.

  • Prototype & Test using 3D printing and rapid fabrication techniques.

  • Collaborate with thermal, electronics, and pack design teams to ensure seamless integration.

  • Document & Improve designs, specifications, and validation results.

  • Innovate by identifying cost-effective, high-performance solutions for battery systems.

Requirements

Minimum Qualification: MSc or PhD in mechanical, chemical, electrical, or equivalent engineering field.

Experience: Industrial and/or academic experience in the development of mechanical and thermal solutions for battery modules or power electronics is desired.

Technical Skills:

  • Strong engineering fundamentals in mechanical design, materials, and structural mechanics.

  • Prototyping Skills: Experience in fast prototyping methods, including 3D-printing and rapid fabrication techniques to quickly validate design concepts.

  • Familiarity with thermal management strategies for battery systems, including air and liquid cooling solutions.

  • Experience in prototype manufacturing environments and exposure to automotive or energy storage industries is a plus.

Key Value Drivers:

  • Team player with a focus on growth, knowledge-sharing, and collaboration.

  • Result-oriented, efficient, and adaptable to change

  • Creative, open-minded, and solution-oriented mindset.

  • Excellent communication skills.
